My review of Martha and Marley Spoon

You may have read that I’m addicted to subscription services. I mean, I can get great stuff without ever leaving my couch. Everything from cosmetics to wine to clothes (I have a love/hate relationship with Stitchfix). I tried Blue Apron recently but forgot to photograph everything. I also just received my first Try The World box which I can wait to play with (review to come).

I’ve been in a bit of a cooking funk lately so I thought I’d try a few of the meal subscriptions for inspiration. You know me, I LOVE to cook but sometimes I don’t want to have to think about it.

I decided to give Martha and MarleySpoon a try. I figured it’s Martha Stewart branding so it’s probably well done. My first impression: the packaging was not very enticing. I understand that she’s trying to be sustainable and all, but Blue Apron and Try the World had much more beautiful packaging. The brown bags just didn’t do it for me.

But the recipes looked great. In case you’ve never tried one of these subscription services, you do get some choices over the recipes you choose. Here are the three recipes I chose:

First, I made the Indonesian Chicken Kebabs. Caveat: I really don’t like chicken. I can only eat it if it’s really super spiced (so it hides the chicken flavor, I know…).  I unpacked the ingredients and the onion was a bit rotten. Fortunately, I had another one on hand.

Aside from chopping a few veggies and marinating the chicken, it was super simple and quick to make. Even the chicken was already cubed which I did not experience with Blue Apron or Hello Fresh. I was a little put off by the less-than-fresh onion, but it was time for the taste test.

It was awesome! I forgot to snap a pic but you can see the finished product in my picture above (and mine looked just like that. not.). But it was really flavorful to be such a simple dish.

The next night, I decided to give the Gluten-Free Goat Cheese Pasta a try.

Again, it was another home run! Again, I forgot to take a finished product pic. Even my non-culinary-minded husband remarked about how much the fresh mint added to the dish. (He doesn’t know this was a subscription meal – he thinks I created it. He didn’t ask so I didn’t tell.) But I truly truly enjoyed this one and will be recreating it on my own. Lemon, goat cheese and mint! You can’t go wrong!

The next night I made the Pork Banh Mi Tacos and they were another huge flavor hit! Again, the produce was not so fresh. The carrot was half rotten so that was a disappointment but fortunately, I was able to use another carrot. But the tacos were really good, including the pickled veggies!

My final impression: the flavors were really really good on all three dishes and they were all something I would eat (make) again. The produce was a bit funky and tired. I did email Martha and Marley Spoon to let them know because it is a bit off-putting when you open the box.

Will I try it again? Maybe. My biggest problem with these subscription meal services is that 1) I don’t like tomatoes and SO many of the meals include them and 2) my hubby doesn’t like most veggies so I have to bridge that gap. But flavor wise? Yes! I’ll watch for a week when all of their menu choices fit my needs because I did find that Martha and Marley Spoon had the most flavor of any of the boxes I’ve tried.
